HI KATLYN HI

Katlyn
HI OK HI

Rachel
INTERVIEW STARTS NOW

Rachel
When did you realize that you wanted to write FOR REAL?

Katlyn
When I was in first grade, I wrote a story (52 pages) called “Follow That Car” and it was based in this universe where dogs and cats had their own worlds that coexisted with humans and my lead character was named Nick and he was a collie. The cats were of ambiguous moral caliber, but they weren’t the bad guys. (This was a thriller mystery) The villains ended up being TWIN DOGS who had very similar paw prints. Yep.

Rachel
Do you ever think about revisiting these characters and really trying to make something of it?

Katlyn
Fuck you.

Rachel
SERIOUS QUESTION

Katlyn
No, because I don’t have the imagination or skill to create a universe where dogs and cats exist with people but also in this underground society with each other.

Rachel
Fair enough.

Katlyn
You can write it though. I really haven’t changed much, I am still writing stories where the lead characters are male dogs. Pretty sad when you think about it.

Rachel
Are there things you refuse to write about?

Katlyn
Hmmm…I refuse to write about things that make me too sad, like global warming. Pandas with low sex drives. Polar bears getting stranded on that last 2×2 of floating iceberg and then dying a certain, sad death.

Rachel
That’s dark dude.

Katlyn
So am I; so am I.

Rachel
Where do you get your ideas from?

Katlyn
Here’s another answer that sounds totally #mommyblog. I’m a writer.  I write about my experiences, so every day events are all stories. That’s how i think about things – as stories. So be careful what you say to me because your words can end up as dialogue. I’ll remember. Also, I come up with stuff because I’ve got a plethora of experience with OpenDiary and Livejournal – just like you!

Rachel
What’s your favorite period in history?

Katlyn
None. Next! I mean, honestly, I hate them all equally.

Rachel
Ok, not a history person, noted. What 5 beauty products can you NOT LIVE WITHOUT EVER?

Katlyn
1. Cetaphil – both the lotion and the cleanser
2. Argan oil for my hair, because girl it’s long
3. Tangle Teezer
4.  Mascara….it’s like paladi….something
5. Lipgloss of any nature really
I can’t believe i came up with FIVE!!!!!!!
I AM THE CHAMPION
MUH FRIEND

Katlyn

Can I just tell you something also that I’ve been thinking about lately?

Rachel
Yes! TELL ME EVERYTHING

Katlyn
OK. So I’ve been watching Project Runway for the last few years, and I developed a crush on Season 10 Dmitry Scholokov, even though he looks like he should be a villain in a movie from the 60s where the villain is also possibly a vampire. Anyway, I follow him on Instagram. He’s kind of skinny-like but in good shape, and I dig that. Also, my favorite Keanu Reeves is circa 1999 The Matrix.

Rachel
Thank you for sharing that with me, and our readers.

Katlyn
You’re welcome.

Rachel Schullo
We know that you’ve been with your boyfriend for many years and he’s amazing and all that. If you WEREN’T with him, what kind of guy would you be with?

Katlyn
The kind of guy who is Keanu Reeves circa The Matrix 1999. You know because he’s the one.

Rachel
In terms of feminism, what would you say to a group of teenage girls who needed guidance?

Katlyn
I guess I’d rather say something to the guys. I feel like girls are forced into learning about their role in society early on
but teenage girls these days are incredibly savvy and lots of them seem to be a part of the movement.  We place a heavy burden on them too.  It’s the guys we need to work on – they’re the ones who need to start speaking out against the systems of oppression. What I mean to say is that the girls are already doing it, they are already fighting the good fight (and have been for a long, long time now). That’s right – I see you teenage girls!

Rachel
Related question: What would you say to a 17 year old you?

Katlyn
I’d say – your loneliness won’t last forever.  There is at least one person out there who understands you. #blessed

Rachel
Love it.

Katlyn
And then I’d say, “Hashtags are going to become a big part of your life someday.” But 17 year old me was an earlier adopter, so I’d be fine with it.

Rachel
What’s your goal with Not Behind You? What do you want to see happen?

Katlyn
My goal is to bring together a community of people who are both informed and creative and give them a voice.

Rachel
Shit that’s good.

Katlyn
And make that voice shout louder than Fox News and the haters and the Republicans and the Pro Lifers.

Rachel
YES.

Katlyn
Yay, mission statements!

Rachel
What’s a fear that isn’t your biggest but is still a fear?

Katlyn
I think about the fact that Ozzie will die someday. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, thinking about how he’ll die. My biggest fear is Max dying, but a constant fear is knowing that Ozzie will. Just a tragedy waiting to happen.

Rachel
The feels.  What do you like best about yourself?

Katlyn
That no one ever sees me coming. I’m surprising, and I know it.
